International Baccalaureat (IB)

basic requirements
Requirements of the KMK of 2022:

An "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International" obtained according to the provisions of the "International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO)/Office du Baccalauréat International" is recognized as a higher education entrance qualification if it was acquired after attending at least twelve ascending grade levels at schools with full-time instruction and the following conditions are met:
a) Among the six examination subjects of the "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International" (IB), the following subjects, referred to by the IB terminology, must be included:

  1.  Two languages at level A or B (at least one of which is a continued foreign language as "Language A" or "Language B HL"),
  2. A natural science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics),
  3. Mathematics (Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation),
  4. A social science subject (History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, Business and Management, Global Politics).
  5. The sixth compulsory subject can, besides the subjects mentioned, be one of the following subjects referred to by the IB terminology: Art/Design, Music, Theatre Arts; Film, Literature and Performance, another modern foreign language, Latin, Classical Greek, General Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Environmental Systems, Computer Science, Design Technology, World Religions, Sports Exercise and Health Science, Digital Society.

b) Among the three subjects to be proven at the "Higher Level" within the "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International", either Mathematics or a natural science subject, i.e. Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, must be included.

c) All subjects must have been consistently taken in the "IB-Diploma Programme", that is, for a rising two-year period.

d) The required six subjects must be graded at least with the IB grade 48. If the IB grade 3 is present in only one subject, this can be offset if at least the IB grade 5 is achieved in another subject of at least the same level of requirement and a total of at least 24 points have been scored.

e) German certificate holders who do not study German at a school abroad with an IB programme must provide evidence of sufficient German language skills before commencing studies in Germany; further details are regulated by state law.

f). If the conditions according to number 1 are not met, successful completion of an additional examination according to the "Framework regulation for access to higher education with foreign educational certificates, for training at the preparatory colleges and for the assessment test" (decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of 15.04.1994 in the respective current version) is required for recognition as a higher education entrance qualification. Recognition as a subject-bound higher education entrance qualification is also possible through a successful year of higher education studies in a country whose school-leaving certificates grant access to higher education in Germany either directly or after a successful year of study.

g). The average grade for an "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International" is calculated in the country where the certificate is assessed. The procedure according to the "Agreement on the Determination of the Overall Grade for Foreign University Entrance Qualifications" (Decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of 15.03.1991 in the respective current version) is applied, with the following specific regulation related to the IB. The average grade (N) is calculated from the total point score (P) indicated in the "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International", considering 42 points as the maximum point score (Pmax) and 24 points as the minimum point score (Pmin); any additional points scored are also taken into account. Total point scores between 42 (Pmax) and 45 points (highest possible IB score plus the maximum 3 additional points) are equated to the German average grade 1.0. The conversion is carried out using the following formula:
N = 1 + 3 * (Pmax - P) / (Pmax-Pmin), with
N = required grade (average grade),
P = total point score indicated in the certificate,
Pmax = 42 points (IB total point score without additional points),
Pmin = 24 points (lower corner value),
N = 1.0 (for 42 ≤ P ≤ 45).

h). The IBO continuously informs the Conference of Ministers of Education about any changes to the final examination (requirements, content, organization) and gives the German school supervision the opportunity to gain insight into the work of the schools. If there is a need for consultation or at the request of a state, the Advisory Board for the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) examines whether the conditions for the recognition of the IB are still given.
