All about the blocked account ( Sperrkonto )

WHAT IS A BLOCKED ACCOUNT ( SPERRKONTO ) ?

This is a frozen bank account that you open while you are abroad to prove that a foreign student can provide his financial ability for studying and living in Germany.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AMOUNT REQUIRED FOR A BLOCKED BANK ACCOUNT ?​

The amount at this moment is: 11208 euros
Upon arrival in Germany, the student is allowed to take 934 euros per month for one year .

SHOULD I OPEN AN ACCOUNT WITH A CERTAIN GERMAN BANK ?​

A blocked account can be opened, in principle, in any financial institution that is allowed to conduct banking transactions in Germany. According to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the following financial institutions currently offer their services to open blocked accounts throughout Germany (list is alphabetically arranged):

WHAT IF I HAVE AN EMERGENCY AND CAN'T travel TO GERMANY ? 

You can receive a refund by submitting an official application from you stating the details of the account to which you want the money to be refunded, or by confirming the German Embassy in your country that your visa application has been cancelled or rejected.​
